So what I do and what I suggest new players should do is sit down with a yellow legal pad and make a good ol' pro and contra list.
To do this properly, you should head to http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/ and check out the "Army List" for every faction and follow these steps(if you are a new player it helps to also have a veteran help you with this a bit):
1. Read through the "What is XY like?" and rate the general overview of that factions playstyle on a scale of 1 to 10.
2. Check out all the Warcasters for the faction. Don't do a big ol' study of them... just skim over it and decide wether you like him/her on the basis of what you read and the miniature preview. When you did this for all Warcasters write down the total number of Warcasters you liked. Also maybe not special things like: "Zerkova cool - needs conversion"
3. Repeat this for Light Warjacks, Heavy Warjacks, Units and Solos and keep writing down the individual numbers of models you like in each category.
4. Rate the overall flair and feel of the army based on the models, pictures and the rules you read on a scale of 1 to 10.
5- Repeat this for all factions or at least for all those that sort of interest you.
Afterwards check your notes and compare to find the highest score. Use some common sense of course, since some armies have a few less models in certain categories than others (f.e. Hordes, Retribution of Scyrah)
Mainly you should ALWAYS chose your army mainly on the basis of their overall general playstyle and their looks. There is not really anything "OP" in WarmaHordes, so better just play what you think looks cool, since you'll be painting and pushing those miniatures around a lot.
Once you chose an army ALWAYS and I mean absolutely always start with the Battlebox. Build them up, maybe paint them up and play a few games with them against other Battleboxes only! This way you will already learn a lot about your faction and you will ease yourself into it. It also means that if you find out you don't actually like the army all that much, you didn't throw 200$/€ out the window.
So much for the process of how I chose my army.
so long
